What is Clinomania: Symptoms and How to Cope with it?

Everybody experiences moments of being completely unmotivated and feeling lethargic. Many people tend to put off doing their work in favor of sleeping in. But occasionally, people experience such a powerful want to lie in bed all day that they are unable to resist it and end up doing so. Clinomania is the name given to this conduct by psychologists (also called Dysania).
What is Clinomania?

It is a strong addiction to want to stay in bed all the time. It is a disorder that involves hiding from the harsh realities of the outside world, remaining in a cozy environment, and sleeping in bed continuously. One can use the bed and blanket as a shield against the challenges one faces in life. This phrase doesn't have a medical definition, but it refers to a persistent unwillingness to get out of bed.
Signs/Symptoms of Clinomania
It may be a sign of clinomania if you are staying in bed much longer than normal. According to studies, using the bed for anything other than sleeping and having sex can disrupt one's sleep schedule. Adults need 7-8 hours of sleep each night, therefore getting much more than that can lead to clinomania. Extreme exhaustion, drowsiness, or sleepiness at odd hours can accompany symptoms.
Clinomania can also emerge along with other mental illnesses including stress and despair. Depression symptoms include withdrawing from others, experiencing loneliness and powerlessness, lacking pleasure, gaining or losing weight, feeling tired all the time, and having sleep problems like insomnia or hypersomnia (extreme sleep).
Many physical health conditions that force a person to stay in bed and rest may also help clinomania develop over time. They will never get enough rest or sleep, no matter how much they do. All day long, they are perpetually worn out and sleepy. Individuals frequently avoid their social, professional, and family obligations because they find them to be boring.
The majority are:
Extending the amount of time spent in bed
They struggle a lot to get out of bed and have mood swings
They quit self-grooming and don't have fun when they have to go out.
Everyone calls them crazy, lazy, or procrastinators. They have sleep disorders like hypersomnia or insomnia.

How should Clinomania be handled?
Spending too much time in bed is the main issue with clinomania, thus initial treatment should concentrate primarily on this.
1. Focusing on the primary topic or problem
Since it was the person's initial presenting issue, it is important to treat any other psychiatric disorders such as phobias, sadness, stress, etc. first if they are the source of the clinomania. Alternatively, if the person is avoiding social interaction due to any kind of anxiety or insecurity, bullying, desertion, or sadness, appropriate measures should be made to address the root issue. Clinomania will be regarded as one of the symptoms of that condition, so the primary focus should be on that issue to subtly address clinomania.
2. A regular sleep routine
Establish a firm timetable for sleep each day and a precise regimen that can be followed. Adults need 7-8 hours of sleep per night to function well and maintain excellent physical and mental health, therefore that must be factored into a regular sleep pattern. Sleep at the designated hour because hormones only begin to release at that moment, avoid doing anything else on your bed but sleeping and having sex. To promote speedier sleep, the bedroom should be serene, peaceful, and kept at a reasonable temperature.
3. Take a walk outside
Sunlight is crucial for maintaining good mental health. Getting enough sunlight throughout the daytime also helps one sleep well at night since it resets the body clock. It is vital to go outside and receive some sun exposure because of this. And the obsession with staying in bed will naturally start to lessen if one spends even a short amount of time in the sun each day.

4. Improve coping abilities
Whenever someone is facing a challenge in life, they should put more effort into learning how to cope with it rather than hiding out in bed all day. To effectively tackle every problem, one should learn how to employ both problem-focused and emotion-focused solutions in daily life. It will assist the person in confronting an issue and acting swiftly.
5. Methods of relaxation
When many thoughts are running through our heads, we often end up making poor decisions for ourselves. One decides to lie in bed and do nothing to avoid the troubles. To reduce the overpowering feeling brought on by life's stresses, one should choose relaxing practices like drinking tea, meditating, or writing.
6. Seek counseling
Clinomania treatment has been demonstrated to be quite successful. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) are effective for treating clinomania since people with the condition frequently have unreasonable and harmful beliefs. Psychotherapy is occasionally used to identify the cause of a problem before treating it.
